Recostruction works in Banja Luka

There is an interesting process of reconstruction of two parallel religious buildings in the city of  Banja Luka. One orthodox church, demolished in World War II, recently rebuilt, and one muslim mosque, demolished in the Civil war in Bosnia and Hercegovina, which is temporary under reconstruction.

The church of Christ the Saviour was built between 1925 and 1939, and destoyed in 1941. Rebuilding of the new church of the same appearance started in 1992, and in May in 2009 the church was finished and consecrated.

The Ferhadija mosque was one of the most important and most beautiful monuments of Ottoman architecture in the SEE region. It was demolished in 1992. The process of reconstruction is going very slowly, because of bad ethnic and political conditions.

Both buildings are rebuilding by the method of restitution, which consideres the brand new construction, but identical in material, appearance and construction system as previous one.

This work is being done by the eminent archeologists Mladen Zagarcanin and Dejan Gazivoda together with students of Archeology from Belgrade. During the last few months they discovered the remains of one roman mention from the second century, two bathrooms, the big pool as well as the parts of heating system. Using systematic archeological researching of Miriste , we have the new knowledge and perspective about this ancient dwelling in the central part of Montenegrin coast.

The Research of Montenegrin bottom of the sea

The Regional Diving Center for the diver’s training in Bijela intends lending to the archeologists, half a million euros worth equipment for researching  Montenegrin bottom of the sea. The executive director of the Regional Diving Center, Veselin Mijajlovic informed us about the planned cooperation with institutions in the countries of the Adriatic coast about the protection of Adriatic Sea cultural treasure.

The undersea archeological research is about to begin this July in cooperation with American Foundation from Key West. Their research ship is already in Albanian waters and very soon expected in ours. Bigova and Risan are the first two locations to be researched and it is planned that the team should work on taking the exhibits out of the sea in the presence of archeologists, conservators and the officials from the Ministry of culture. The Diving Center has valid information about possibility of finding remains of the sunken navigable object from various historic periods. The first step is retrieving existing undersea objects of great value that are in private possession of local public places such as taverns, bars and private collections and putting them back in museums and galleries.

This kind of research is prohibited by the law without archeologists taking part in it and the Regional Diving Center welcomes them to join the training as soon as possible.
